FAQs - Library Card & My Account

How do I get a Library card?

1. You may obtain a Library card by showing proof of residency within the boundaries of the Bartlett Public Library District. Examples:

  • Illinois Driver’s License or I.D. card
  • Utility bill
  • Mortgage papers
  • Rental agreements
  • Title to property

Note: Not all portions of the Village of Bartlett are within our Library boundaries, however most do have Library service. If you are a member of another library district we will be happy to honor your card.

2. Visit Patron Services and fill out the registration form. Each applicant will be asked to present identification and proof of residency. A card will be processed and you may check out material immediately.

3. Children under 12 years of age and still in elementary school may apply for a Library card and will need to have a parent or legal guardian sign a responsibility statement on behalf of the child. There is no minimum age requirement.

If your Library card is lost or stolen, please notify us as soon as possible. If the Library has not been notified, materials on that card remain the responsibility of the cardholder. Library cards are good for three years and will expire unless renewed by the cardholder.

Why can't I renew an item on my account? It says I have renewals left.

Occasionally, you may not be able to renew items because there is a problem with your account or an item may satisfy another patron’s hold request. Library policy determines if an item can be renewed.

Where can I use my Library card?

You can use your Bartlett Public Library District Card here, online at www.bartlettlibrary.org and at most public libraries in the state of Illinois. Usually you will need to register your card at each participating library. You will need to bring your current home library card and a photo ID. Rights and privileges will vary by library.

When are my items due? What is the checkout period for items?

Loan periods vary depending on the type of item checked out. Most items are checked out for three weeks. DVDs, Hot Reads, and YA Videogames are checked out for one week.

Discovery Packs, Kits for Families in Change, and Hot Reads are not renewable. All other items may be renewed twice if not on “Hold Request” for another patron.

How many items can I check out at a time?

You may check out up to 99 items with your Library card.

What is my password and how do I change it?

Your password is a 4-digit pin we set for you. The password is based on your birthday. It’s the two numbers of your birth month, and the LAST two digits of your birth year. So if you were born in April of 1973, your password would be 0473. Follow these steps to change your password.

1. Click My Record on the My Account menu and log in. The My Record page is displayed.

2. Click Change Logon. The Change Logon area, where you specify your user name and password, is expanded.

  • Select (check) Change Password.
  • Type your current password in the Old Password box.
  • Type the new password in the New Password box. The password must be a minimum of 4 characters and a maximum of 16. You can use capital letters, lowercase letters, and numbers, but not special keyboard characters or spaces.
  • Type the new password again in the Verification box.

3. Click Save. A confirmation message is displayed.

How do I log into my account?

  1. Click Log In/Register in the My Account menu. The log-in form is displayed.

  2. Type your barcode number (from your Library card) in the Username or Barcode box. Enter the number with no spaces.

  3. The Library accepts a user name instead of the barcode. To set up a user name, click Create username.

  4. Type your account password in the Password box.

  5. Note: Unless you changed it, your password is a default we set for you. It’s a 4-digit PIN, based on your birthday. It’s the two numbers of your birth month, and the LAST two digits of your birth year. So if you were born in April of 1973, your password would be 0473.

  6. Click Log In.

Can I find out what titles I checked out in the past?

We take your privacy very seriously. For this reason, we do not keep records of titles you’ve checked out. However, if you log into your Library account, you can keep a record of the titles you’ve read going forward.

  1. Click My Record on the My Account menu and log in. The My Record page is displayed.
  2. Click Contact Information and Preferences. The Contact Information and Preferences area, where you specify your contact information, is expanded.
  3. Select (check) Maintain reading list.

This action is not retroactive, so your reading list will be maintained from the point that you make this change to your account.

Note: A maximum of 2,000 are saved to your reading list. The Library staff will not be able to access this list at any time.

How can I place a hold on an item?

You can place a hold on an item using our Online Catalog using these steps:

  1. Search the Library Catalog for the item you wish to place on hold.
  2. Click on the Place Request button. You will be prompted to log into your Library account.
  3. Click on the Submit Request button to process your request. A confirmation screen will be displayed.

You can view all of your pending requests by clicking on Requests within your patron account.

Alternatively, any Library staff member can assist you with placing a hold in-person or via the telephone.

How can I renew an item?

Eligible items will be automatically renewed 3 days before the items are due and the new due date will be from the original due date based on loan period length of the item (typically 1 or 3 weeks). The automatic renewal will occur for the number of renewals allowed for the item.

To renew items manually:

  1. Login to your Library account using the Library Catalog.

  2. Click on the Items Out link on the right-hand side. All items currently checked out on your account will be displayed.

  3. Find the item you wish to renew. If the item is renewable or has renewals left (indicated under the Renewals Left column) you can click the item’s checkbox and click the Renew Selected Items button.

Alternatively, you can click on the Renew All Items button to renew all renewable items on your account.

Please note that some items, such as items placed on hold for another patron, are not renewable.

How can I pay for my fines online?

You can pay your Library fines online using the Illinois Fund E-PAY system. E-PAY accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover. Credit card transactions may be assessed a 2.35% service fee with a $1.00 minimum.

To make payments using E-Pay please follow these steps:
